More than two decades have passed since 11-year-old Cody Haynes vanished from his family’s home in Kittitas, Washington — yet his disappearance remains an open and haunting mystery that still grips those who remember the case and hope for answers.
The Night He Disappeared
On the evening of September 11, 2004, Cody was at home with his family in a small apartment on Main Street in the tiny town of Kittitas, a community with just over 1,000 residents. According to reports, Cody had refused to do the dishes after dinner earlier in the evening. As a result, he was made to sit at the kitchen table for several hours as punishment, and later sent to his bedroom around midnight — told not to leave for any reason.
Cody was last seen by his sisters that night; no adult checked on him again for close to 18 hours. His father, Richard “Rick” Haynes Sr., left the home early that next morning, telling police he was making a long drive across Eastern Washington to look for car parts — a trip that would take him dozens of miles and more than a dozen hours to complete before returning home in the late afternoon.
When Rick and his father’s girlfriend, Marla Jaye Harding, finally checked on Cody between 4 and 5 p.m. on September 12, 2004, he was nowhere to be found. About two hours later, at around 6 p.m., police were called and told that the boy had run away from home.
Investigation and Early Questions
From the beginning of the investigation, many aspects raised questions. Cody’s bike and a bag of his clothing were found hidden in a nearby shed — fueling suspicion that he might have left on his own or planned to return.
But there were other troubling concerns:
- No adult in the household checked on Cody for nearly 18 hours after he was confined to his room.
- Neither Rick nor Harding took part in the community search efforts or attended a candlelight vigil organized for Cody in the days after he vanished.
- Police eventually obtained a search warrant and conducted multiple searches of the family’s apartment, seizing vehicles and other items, and discovering areas where floor coverings had been recently replaced — possibly covering something beneath.
- Cody’s four sisters were removed from the home by Child Protective Services shortly after his disappearance, based on concerns about “inappropriate discipline” and lack of supervision.
Despite these investigations and searches, no definitive trace of Cody has ever been found.
Theories and Ongoing Mystery
Police initially explored the possibility that Cody had run away — but many investigators and community members have expressed doubt that an 11-year-old could disappear without leaving stronger evidence or sightings.
Over the years, theories have ranged from accidental death and cover-up to foul play inside the home. The fact that Cody’s disappearance happened in a town so small — less than a block away from the local police department — and yet produced so little evidence has left many people frustrated and haunted by unanswered questions.
Although prints and traces of possible blood were reportedly found under replaced flooring during a police search, subsequent testing did not lead to public breakthroughs or arrests.
Where Things Stand Today
As of 2026, the case of Richard “Cody” Haynes Jr. remains officially unsolved. Cody would be in his early 30s today, and he is still considered an endangered missing person. Law enforcement agencies, including the FBI at one point, have been involved in the investigation, and his case is listed with federal and local missing-person databases to help generate tips and awareness.
Anyone with information about Cody’s disappearance is still encouraged to contact the Kittitas Police Department or the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC).
A Community Still Remembering
Unlike many forgotten cold cases, Cody’s story lingers in the hearts of those who knew him, the residents of Kittitas, and those who follow missing-persons cases across the country. His mysterious disappearance is a stark reminder of how swiftly a life can vanish — and how, even decades later, the search for truth and justice endures. More info here from King 5.
